News Statement by the Board of the Rectors' Conference of German Universities of Music

The Board of the Rectors' Conference of German Universities of Music has published the following statement on the current report on the abuse of power at universities of musik:

The Executive Board of the Rectors' Conference of German Universities of Music (Rektorenkonferenz der deutschen Musikhochschulen, RKM) is concerned about the results of the survey conducted by the Initiative against Abuse of Power, which are currently being published in the media.

The cases described highlight grievances and the need for action, which are being taken seriously and discussed by the RKM. The Executive Board and university management are in close dialogue about current developments and the measures to be taken.

The demands paper of the transnational student initiative against the abuse of power, which was sent to the university management of the 24 RKM member universities at the end of last year, was intensively discussed at the RKM winter conference in January.

The RKM Board is seeking to enter into a direct dialogue with the initiative. The university management is also in dialogue with their student councils and student representatives. The RKM Anti-Discrimination Working Group, which was set up last summer,  has also been given the task of drafting a well-founded position paper, which, in addition to outlining the current situation, will also outline future prospects and recommendations for action for the conservatoires. The finalisation and adoption of this paper and the agreement on coordinated measures for the RKM universities are on the agenda of the RKM summer conference in May.
