Professional field for which the course qualifies
The programme aims to prepare students for a wide range of careers in music education and teaching by providing them with individual and systematic support. This gives them a high level of artistic training and first-class qualifications in music education.
The BMus. Instrumental/Vocal Pedagogy (Jazz) programme is aimed at national and international target groups. It is intended for students from general secondary schools, music secondary schools, or vocational music schools who have at least an intermediate school-leaving certificate. Students must demonstrate their artistic and pedagogical aptitude in an aptitude test.
The Bachelor's degree programme in Jazz Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy prepares students for varied artistic and pedagogical careers. The combination of artistic and pedagogical course content opens up a wide range of career opportunities, from permanent positions in educational or artistic institutions, to freelance work as a musician or instrumental/vocal teacher. Areas of activity include teaching at music schools (both face-to-face and online), teaching instruments or vocals at general education schools, day-care centres, vocational schools, and other educational institutions. Depending on their profiles, students can also pursue activities in the fields of music education, music journalism and the creative industries. Students can position themselves individually in the educational and artistic fields and respond flexibly to the needs of the job market thanks to the high level of instrumental/vocal teaching qualifications they gain, combined with musical and artistic skills and stylistic versatility.
Optimal professional qualification and employability are ensured by the fact that, in the aptitude test, students must demonstrate their artistic development potential and their prospects for teaching activities. During their studies, they develop the most extensive jazz-specific and stylistically diverse repertoire possible in their main subject classes. In a chosen minor subject, they supplement their skills, e.g. with regard to stylistic, instrumental or vocal technique. In the university's own ensembles, they develop the interactive and communicative professional skills. The knowledge acquired in the practical music and music theory/science modules enables them to collaborate effectively with other musicians, and to reflect on and contextualise their musical means of expression. Students also acquire professional skills in studio and recording technology and music production. At the same time, they gain fundamental and specialised subject-specific didactic and practical teaching knowledge in a wide range of music education subjects, as well as direct insights into their future professional practice through internships. The interdisciplinary nature of the key skills modules ensures they remain competitive and future-proof in the job market. By selecting options within the profile area or undertaking specialised profile courses, students can prioritise specific content and gain additional qualifications. Interdisciplinary networking is particularly possible here. As part of their Bachelor's thesis, students work independently on a subject-specific topic using scientific methods.
If proven suitability is demonstrated, a second main subject in music education can also be studied.
At the end of the programme, graduates will have acquired the following skills:
- They will be able to independently engage with musical works from various jazz styles in a theoretical, reflective, artistic, practical and improvisational manner.
- They will have learned about and internalised different improvisational concepts as a means of artistic expression and will be able to teach these methods and didactics.
- They will be able to enrich cultural and social life in their environment and to provide responsible impetus through their artistic and music education work.
- They are competent in dealing with people in all their diversity (in individual and group lessons) and identify with both broad musical education and the promotion of excellence.
- They are well versed in several musical styles and can apply their artistic and pedagogical skills flexibly.
- They have advanced practical musical skills, particularly in the area of ensemble playing, as well as extensive skills in subject didactics and teaching practice and, where applicable, in other selected areas of music education, depending on their individual focus.
- They are familiar with the requirements of their future professional field and have knowledge of media, digital technology, music production and music education, as well as techniques for maintaining their long-term professional health.
- Their communication and cooperation skills enable them to play a lasting and reflective role in shaping society.
- They have scientific working techniques and are able to deal critically and reflectively with the current artistic-pedagogical discourse.
