News Success Suyeon Kang Appointed Professor of Chamber Music in Essen

Violinist Suyeon Kang (graduate of Prof Daniel Gaede's class) has been appointed Professor of Chamber Music at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen for the 2025/26 winter semester. Congratulations!

The Korean-Australian violinist Suyeon Kang enjoys a varied international career.

A winner of numerous international awards, she won 1st Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2015 Michael Hill International Violin Competition. Her other international honours include first and/or special prizes at the following violin competitions: Yehudi Menuhin, Indianapolis, Bayreuth, Buenos Aires and Leopold Mozart.

She was named "Young Performer of the Year" by Symphony Australia ABC at the age of 16, and has since performed internationally as a soloist with various orchestras. She released her first CD on ABC Classics at the age of 16. Her second album, featuring works by Bartók and Bloch, was recorded in 2016.

She is particularly active in the chamber music scene and is a sought-after guest at music festivals worldwide, collaborating with a wide range of artists. She is the co-founder of the Trio Boccherini (string trio), to which she dedicates much of her musical life. Her debut CDs featuring Beethoven's complete string trios (Genuin) received great critical acclaim. Her third album, dedicated to the Hungarian repertoire, is planned for release on BIS Records in 2024.

In 2021, Suyeon was appointed concertmaster of the Kammerakademie Potsdam in Germany. She is also a member of the 15-piece Camerata Bern ensemble in Switzerland. She receives regular invitations to perform as guest concertmaster, often in a play/direct capacity, with various orchestras, including the Kammerakademie Potsdam, the Barockorchester Sevilla, the Münchner Kammerorchester, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the CHAARTS Chamber Artists, the Camerata Strumentale Città di Prato, the Württembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the Camerata Bern.

She has studied with Antje Weithaas, Daniel Gaede, Rainer Schmidt, Hatto Beyerle, Götz Richter, Alice Waten and Josette Esquedin Morgan. She has taught as an assistant to Weithaas and Gaede at the Nuremberg University of Music and the Hanns Eisler Berlin University of the Arts.
