SAMTIC - South African Music Technology and Innovation Capacity-Building
As part of the Erasmus+ South Africa meeting, the funding line for strengthening university cooperation between the EU and South Africa was presented. The SAMTIC project emerged from this initiative, which was initiated by Professor Karendra Devroop from the Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa, in cooperation with Professor Toni Hinterholzinger from the Nuremberg University of Music, and four other universities.
Prof Devroop became aware of Nuremberg University of Music (NUM) as part of its LEONARDO activities and made contact with Prof Hinterholzinger, marking the beginning of a successful international partnership.
SAMTIC aims to build capacity in digital music education between the EU and South Africa. It strengthens teacher training, integrates modern digital content into curricula, modernises laboratories and studios, and provides practice-oriented further education using current digital platforms. SAMTIC also promotes joint research and art projects, and cultural exchange.
The project addresses the need of many South African universities for modern music technology, which offers significant opportunities for education, employment, and the music industry. At the same time, European partners benefit from the innovative teaching methods and cultural perspectives of their South African counterparts.
SAMTIC is one of the largest and most significant projects of its kind in the field of digital music education and intercultural cooperation between the EU and Africa.
Following its successful approval by the EU, we are delighted to welcome Prof Karendra Devroop on her first visit to the NUM — an important step towards sustainable cooperation and exchange.
