News Success Dawoon Kim successful in competition

Cellist Dawoon Kim (Master Class student in the class of Prof Jakob Spahn) has won third prize prize at the international "Franz Cibulka Competition" in Graz. Congratulations!

Cello player Dawoon Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1995. She received her first musical training at the renowned Yewon Art School and Seoul Arts High School. She went on to complete a Bachelor's degree at Yonsei University in Seoul, followed by a Master's degree at Nuremberg University of Music. She is currently refining her skills in Prof Jakob Spahn's Master Class at the same university.

Important artistic impulses were gained through her participation in masterclasses with renowned cellists such as David Geringas, Arto Noras and Jérôme Pernoo.

Dawoon Kim gained orchestral experience as a member of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden academy in 2023, and as deputy principal cellist at the Komische Oper Berlin in the 2023/24 season. Since 2024, she has been a permanent member of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, the first Korean to join this traditional orchestra.

She has performed as a soloist with various orchestras, including the Symphony Orchestra for the Next Generation (S.O.N.G.), the Schwabach Chamber Orchestra, and the Banatul Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dawoon Kim is also a multiple prizewinner in national and international competitions. She won first prize at the Vienna International Music Competition, the Peters Music Competition, and the Korean Chamber Orchestra's national music competition. She was also awarded first prize and the special prize from the Minister of Culture at the Daegu Broadcasting Corporation competition. Her other prizes include second prize at the Busan MBC Music Competition and the prestigious Dong-A Music Competition.
