News Artist in Residence Mariana Zwarg

Marina Zwarg has been invited to be this year's artist in residence at the jazz festival 'Young Lions on Stage'. On Sunday 10 May, the festival ensemble will present the results of their three-day workshop with Marina Zwarg in the university's orchestra hall from 7 pm. Admission is free!

This year's concert by the 'Young Lions on Stage' festival ensemble is dedicated to Brazilian genius Hermeto Pascoal, who would have turned 90 in 2026. Few other musicians have combined composition, improvisation, folk music, avant-garde and spiritual sound research as naturally as he did. His "música universal" is a vibrant universe of sound, brimming with rhythmic energy, melodic freedom, and unexpected turns.

The Artist in Residence is Brazilian flautist Mariana Zwarg, daughter of long-time Pascoal collaborator Itiberê Zwarg. In her artistic work, she further develops the concept of música universal in her own way, showcasing her virtuosity, improvisational depth, and luminous sound imagination.

At the heart of the project is an intensive three-day workshop with the specially assembled festival ensemble. Together, they will bring to life original compositions, some of which have been specially written for this line-up and are based on original manuscripts. Instant composition, collective improvisation and rhythmic fireworks come together to create a rich, vibrant overall sound.
