Professional field for which the course qualifies
The course aims to provide students with the best possible preparation for a wide range of careers in music education and mediation. This is achieved through individual and systematic supervision, providing students with a high level of artistic training and first-class music pedagogy qualifications.
The BMus course Elemental Music Pedagogy Jazz/Crossover programme is aimed at national and international target groups. It is therefore intended for students from general education schools, music grammar schools, or vocational music schools who have at least an intermediate school-leaving certificate. They must demonstrate their artistic and pedagogical aptitude in a qualifying exam.
This artistic-pedagogical Bachelor's degree programme in Elemental Music Pedagogy Jazz/Crossover prepares students for versatile artistic and pedagogical careers. The combination of artistic and pedagogical training content opens up a wide range of professional opportunities, from permanent employment in a pedagogical or artistic institution to working as a freelance musician or instrumental/vocal pedagogue.
The BMus course. Elemental Music Pedagogy (Jazz/Crossover) programme focuses on the diverse possibilities of artistic expression through music, language and movement. It focuses on individuals and their unique abilities and skills. The programme covers the objectives, content and methodologies of elemental music-making, experimentation and creation with various age groups and target audiences, including those with mixed abilities. The programme combines musical and personality-building objectives. Content is based on fundamental musical phenomena, which are explored through improvisation, creativity and reproducibility using various expressive media, such as voice, speech, body movement, and sound production with instruments, materials and objects. The approach strives for a balance between 'performing' (technical reproduction) and 'creative' (creative production) activities. Students also acquire basic and specialised didactic and practical teaching knowledge in a comprehensive range of music pedagogy subjects, and gain direct insights into future professional practice through planned internships.
Optimum professional qualification and employability are ensured by the fact that, in addition to demonstrating artistic development skills, students must also demonstrate prospects for pedagogical development in the qualifying exam. During their studies, they develop an extensive and stylistically diverse repertoire in their second main subject. They supplement their competences in a chosen subsidiary subject, e.g. in terms of stylistic or instrumental breadth. Professionally relevant interactive and communicative skills are developed through participation in the university's own ensembles. The knowledge acquired in the music theory and academic modules enables students to collaborate with other musicians and to reflect on and contextualise their musical expression consciously. The EMP-specific practical subjects of percussion, dance and voice provide a solid foundation in instrumental and vocal skills for music and dance activities with large groups. Students can choose from a range of options within the profile area or special Bachelor key profiles to focus on specific content and gain additional qualifications. In particular, interdisciplinary networking is possible here. As part of their Bachelor's thesis, students work independently on a topic related to their chosen subject using academic methodology.
Provided they can prove their suitability, they can also study a second artistic and educational subject as their second main subject.
By the end of the degree programme, graduates will have acquired the following competencies:
- They can handle music, language and movement independently and theoretically and reflectively, as well as practically.
- They are skilled in inclusive group work in the context of a pedagogy of diversity.
- They can enrich cultural and social life in their community through their artistic and music pedagogical work, particularly through the two-pillar degree programme. Music Education in Elemental Music Pedagogy and the instrumental/vocal second main subject.
- They have a strong knowledge of several musical and stylistic areas and can therefore apply their artistic, pedagogical and improvisational skills flexibly.
- They have advanced practical music-making skills, particularly in Elemental Music Pedagogy and ensemble music-making. They also have in-depth skills in specialised didactic methods and teaching practice, as well as other selected areas of Elemental Music Pedagogy, instrumental/vocal or general Music Pedagogy, depending on their individual focus.
- Their communication and collaborative skills enable them to contribute to society in a sustainable and reflective way.
- They possess academic working techniques and can engage critically and reflectively with current artistic and pedagogical discourse.
