News Event Young Lions on Stage 2025

Our popular jazz festival "Young Lions on Stage", which the University is organising for the 14th time in cooperation with the Jazz Studio Nürnberg, will take place this year from 28 April to 17 May. On eleven evenings, our young jazz musicians will present their fresh sounds and exciting grooves!

Big Band

The Big Band of Nuremberg University of Music will open the festival on 28 April in the main hall of the Kulturwerkstatt Auf AEG. Under the direction of Prof. Steffen Schorn, the band will perform a tried and tested two-part programme:

In the first part, fans of the classic big band sound will get their money's worth with selected orchestral gems from Duke Ellington's masterpiece "Far East Suite". A tribute to one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time!

In the second part of the programme, the audience can, as always, look forward to the freshly baked compositions from the creative pool of Prof. Steffen Schorn's jazz composition class.

Artist in Residence: Roberto Bonati

On 5th May Roberto Bonati and his trio "Madreperla" will be in Nuremberg. The Italian composer, conductor and bassist is the artistic director of the Parma Frontiere Jazz Festival and of the jazz department at the Arrigo Boito Conservatory in Parma.
As one of the founding fathers of the "European Jazzworkshop", a unique collaboration in Europe between several jazz festivals and music academies (including Oslo, Glasgow, Hamburg, Vienna, Nuremberg and Parma), he can already look back on several years of fruitful artistic and educational collaboration with the jazz department of the NUM and will be presenting his own music for the first time in Nuremberg .

Roberto Bonati will bring one of his large suites with him, which he will rehearse with the specially assembled festival ensemble of Nuremberg University of Music and perform it in the main hall of the Künstlerhaus: "Nor Sea, nor Land, nor Salty Waves" - a personal homage to poetic Scandinavian traditions.

With his trio Madreperla, you will also have the opportunity to experience the classically trained maestro improvising on the double bass: A new trio with two exceptional musicians of the younger generation, playing new compositions by the leader, which embody a special sound: evocative, chamber music-like, balanced between melody and experimentation, a synthesis of different traditions and languages, from jazz to folk to contemporary music.

Our students on stage

The heart of the festival continues to be the evenings in the Jazz Studio on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, when two or three of the university's up-and-coming bands present themselves in all their artistic diversity.
